In a story that is very close to our hearts for obvious reasons, Partick Thistle donated their entire stock of matchday pies to a homeless charity on New Year’s Day after their SPL game against Celtic was postponed.
With a water-logged pitch causing the fixture to be scuttled, Thistle’s catering staff were left with a “bumper stock” of pies on their hands after buying in extra for the big game.
Faced with the prospect of having to bin the entire lot, club officials contacted Glasgow-based homeless charity The Marie Trust, with the idea of donating all the pies to the needy.
“We’re happy to find a good home for some of our stock,” said Ian Maxwell, Partick Thistle’s managing director.
“Unfortunately, one of the consequences of games getting called off is that a large amount of stock can end up going to waste.
“It’s a time of the year to think of those less fortunate than ourselves and, unfortunately, there are a lot of people around Glasgow who don’t have anywhere to go for New Year.
“As a community focused club it is great to be able to give something back and I only hope that this small action on our part will in some small way give those at the charity a boost at the start of 2015.”
Cracking stuff. There’s really nothing like a pie-based feelgood story to put a smile on your face.
