It wasn’t a particularly strong field for one reason or another but, after whittling their 10-strong shortlist down to a final three, FIFA saw fit to hand their Puskas Award for the best goal scored during 2011 to Santos wunderkind Neymar for his fine fleet-footed ‘slalom’ effort against Flamengo back in July…

A worthy winner no doubt, but not a patch on 2010’s Puskas pick; Hamit Altintop’s rip-roaring 25-yard volley against Kazahkstan.

While we’re on the subject, Pies are in a position to offer you an quick update on Neymar’s road-warrior Mohawk…

It’s worse than ever.

It’s amazing how he manages to use skill to pass all of those incredibly high quality defensive challenges.

  2. Mr. Sparkle says:

If this goal was scored in Spain, Italy or England than I’d understand, but the Brazilian league is hardly competitive enough for a goal from the tournament to be even considered to be amazing.

  3. Redskywalker says:

    Stankovic’s was miles better

  4. Titus says:

Hardly competitive enough??? I don’t think it’s fair to discredit someone’s incredible goal because in the eyes of some people (mostly Europeans) no team is any good unless they play in Europe. To suggest that he couldn’t do this in the Premier League or La Liga is entirely speculative. Would you be more impressed if he did this against Stoke??? Heck I think the Flamengo squad is more of a test than say Messi scoring agains Osasuna… If you don’t watch Brazilian football you should check it out sometime. It’s very entertaining and lots of skill on display. That’s why Barcelona aside, Brazilian clubs that win Copa Libertadores actually tend to beat whoever the Champions League winner is

  5. Mr. T says:

@Chris, Titus, Mr. Sparkle – WAATP should organize a ‘Titus’ Comment of the Season award for the loyal fans. :)

  6. UnitedYank says:

    Awesome individual effort. Class goal.

That being said, I think Rooney’s was a better, more difficult goal to score. If you then take into account the significance of the game and occasion, even more so.

Neymar’s slick though. Can’t wait to see him come to Europe

  7. Pkhakheria says:

I can only hope Mendy’s goal will be considered in 2012

  8. Josh says:

Hasn’t got a scratch on Rooney’s goal, poor decision. He wouldn’t have done this in the Prem or La Liga.

  9. Lady B says:

That goal was the worst of the 3! I can’t stand Wayne Rooney, but even I have to admit that his was a bloody good goal, and it should have one! Not some little bastard offspring of a zebra and the singer of Flock of Seagulls!

  10. Here we go again says:

    dat haircut

  11. Al says:

makes no difference where he scored it, that goal was a belter in any league, not many players could do that skill at the end while walking never mind at pace. As for Rooney’s goal? I reckon he shinned it!!

  12. V says:

Are you all serious? This goal and any other “skill-based” goals (this one even having a good combination with his team mate) will always be marginally better than your so called “wonder-strikes” and “bycicle-kicks”

  13. Chimpo says:

this is pretty badass gotta say

  14. Del says:

Bring him to the Premier League!

  15. Mr. Sparkle says:

@Titus, fair enough. I should not declare my arrogance and ignorance so proudly. I shall watch Brazilian football one of these days.
