Hugo Vieira scored an early contender for Goal of the Season during the Emperor’s Cup clash between Yokohama F. Marinos and Sanfrecce Hiroshima this week.

The stunning goal with the scores all-square at 2-2, when Portuguese attacker Vieira picked up the ball on the right flank after a quick counter-attack.

Finding himself almost on the level with the goal-line, rather then cross the ball into the box for an onrushing team-mate, the 29-year-old Vieira curled the ball with the outside of his right foot, totally bamboozling the ‘keeper and firing into the back of the net…

Quite an exquisite finish! Although the ‘keeper could arguably have done a little better.

The goal would win the game for Yokohama, who now move into the fifth round of the competition.

On that first video I was ready to totally roast the keeper, but if you look at the 2nd video (more the keeper’s viewpoint) you can understand the skill (and surprise) of the strike.

Keeper was done up like a kipper. Great strike.
