Having already sealed their place at the World Cup, holders Germany put the finishing touch on their flawless Group C qualification campaign by signing off with a tenth win in ten outings – a 5-1 demolition job of Azerbaijan.

Leon Goretzka opened the scoring in style with just eight minutes on the clock, the Schalke midfielder demonstrating excellent technique to squeeze a back-heel up and into the top corner from close range…

Unorthodox, but ruddy brilliant.

Azerbaijan then forced an equaliser before half-time, only for Germany to emerge for the second-half freshly riled.

Indeed, a flood of goals ensued after the restart, with Sandro Wagner, Antonio Rudiger and Goreztka (again) all finding the net before Emre Can capped of the rout with a trademark 25-yard missile…

There was one minor fly in the ointment for Die Mannschaft, who lost Shkodran Mustafi to a serious injury mid-way through the first half.

The Arsenal defender limped off to be replaced by Matthias Ginter with just 36 minutes gone…

Jogi Loew seemed less than optimistic about Mustafi’s condition directly after the match, telling reporters:

Mustafi seems to have some muscle or fibre tear. It could force him into a long break.

Not good.
