The ten FIFA nominees for the Puskas Award 2011 (“Goal of the Year’ in Layman’s terms) have been announced, and the shortlist looks something* like this…

(*It looks exactly like this)

1. Benjamin de Ceulaer, LOKEREN vs Club Brugge

2. Giovani dos Santos, MEXICO vs United States

3. Julio Gomez, MEXICO U17 vs Germany U17

4. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, AC MILAN vs Lecce

5. Lisandro Ezequiel Lopez, ARSENAL SARANDI vs Olimpo

6. Lionel Messi, BARCELONA vs Arsenal

7. Neymar, SANTOS vs Flamengo

8. Heather O’Reilly, US Women vs Colombia Women

9. Wayne Rooney, MAN UTD vs Man City

10. Dejan Stankovic, INTER MILAN vs Schalke 04

Which goal’s your money on folks? I’ll have ten groats on Mr Rooney, though I wouldn’t be at all surprised if a black player happened to win it this year considering this is FIFA we’re talking about. A big ‘well done’ to Neymar then!

This way to watch last year’s winner, that stunning volley from Hamit Altintop.

  1. ds. says:

quite liked the first one, it was the prettiest. but they do take the occassion into consideration so my money’s on one tiny argentinian goal-spaniel.

  2. Dave says:

some of those goals weren’t all that great… i’d go for rooney aswell.

  3. Here we go again says:

Technically, Stankovic deserves it. But, in seen from a beauty perspective, I liked the Lopez goal the most. And, on another note, why the h*** is the female included? Just to have a woman there? The goal in itself was nothing special.

  4. lake067 says:

I’m surprised the Eric Hassli goal wasn’t considered.

I liked Zlatan’s goal. Two defenders all over him and he just rifles it into the top corner. Much too easy for him. If you consider the circumstances though, the Julio Gomez goal was pretty special.

  5. Anonymous says:

The julio Gomez goal was in the last minuite of the u17 world cup final. It was played infrint of 100000 people. That alone gives him the win

  6. Archbishop Betty Snagcock says:

@lake 067: ye and so many others deserve to be on here, like messi’s v. madrid

it’s hard to choose this year, either ibra/neymar/rooney

  7. Stopping the BS says:

    Rooney.

But FIFA are douchebags so they’ll give it to Messi.

  8. Stevesy says:

I’d give it to Rooney but either Mexican goal is a close 2nd/3rd.

  9. Australien says:

    I was weighing up between 2, 5 and 8.

    Then stankovic turned up.

    Oh Lord.

  10. Les says:

    rooney, then neymar, then ibra

  11. Nuno says:

I actually prefer López’s goal over Rooney’s, too bad the poor quality of the video, but as it was in a ‘minor’ game, don’t think it will win. It’s always very hard to choose THE best, there are quite a few great goals up there. it’s all about what you value most (López’s goal is more difficult than Rooney’s, but Rooney was playing against better defenders/keeper)…

  12. df says:

eric hassli’s goal and that black (not to be racist) guy from the mls goal of the year shouldve been on this list

  13. Redskywalker says:

Got to be Dos Santos’ for me.

The Sheer comdey of it, the slow lob and the rediculously Biased comentary are utterly brilliant!

  14. Tom Jones says:

    Dos Santos FTW!!!

  15. Patrick says:

    1 is awesome.
    3 isn’t that great.
I like the old Italian guy after Zlatan’s goal.
Rooney’s is still epic and I hate Man U.
10 is cool because it’s just a straight volley.
But god damn it, don’t thank “god” after you score or any of that shit. You look like a wanker.

  16. :) says:

has to dos santos or roonye- bth spectacular and at crucial points in crucial games

  17. Anonymous says:

Of all the overhead volleys in this list Rooney’s is the best I mean he puts right on the top right corner. Dos Santos’ goal is also epic because threaded the needle on that one and plus he made Tim Howard cry lol

  18. Eric says:

Berbatov’s overhead goal versus Liverpool was a far far superior to Rooney’s. FIFA gave the nod to the wrong player from United for this award.

  19. Elwood says:

ah, the customary Messi and female goal, neither of which in my opinion were that great, Messi’s was good but not worthy of this shortlist, while the women’s goal is just nothing special about it, you see better goals in Sunday League games

  20. nick says:

Darlington Nagbe was the “black guy” and yeah great goal as was eric hassli’s but of this list probs go for julio gomez althought it would be a shame for his career to peak at 16!

  21. rij says:

tim howards reaction to the dos santos goal is absolutely classic

  22. Pilot says:

The commentary in the Gio goal is not biased. Pablo Ramirez is always making the game exciting. He screams gooall like that when USA scores also.

  23. +1 for Hassli’s goal. Stankovic’s goal is the only thing coming close to Hassli.

  24. higigg says:

Neymar’s was the best for individual skill,
Messi’s was the best team goal,
    Stankovic’s goal was something else,
and Rooney’s has been hyped to high heaven but will probably end up winning (should be Neymar’s or Stankovic’s in my opinion though)

  25. Papi says:

This award is for individual effort, and just as I thought, they -had- to include Messi for something. FIFA are asshats and will probably give it to him. I’d give my vote to Rooney, Dos Santos, the first guy, or Neymar.

  26. beef says:

the guy who thinks berbatov’s overhead was better than rooney’s needs an eye test.

the first goal is so very pretty, think that or stankovic’s is my favourite. none of them measure up to that one in the irish league last year. burrows i think his name was. best. goal. ever.

  27. AT says:

I’d probably give it to Neymar, the movement, skill and finish was complete package. Rooney will probably get it for his shin

  28. casey says:

Surely Darlington Nagbe deserves a mention. Goal was amazing.

  29. WildScotsman6 says:

No shouts for the Mexico goal vs. US? looked the best in my eyes. Plus it was mex – us.. big rivalry.

  30. Alex says:

Where ist eren derdiyok?? Much Better than the woman´s goal or slatan… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2E3S9o7s4v8

  31. HenryxEdge says:

Is this Lisandro that plays at Lyon? If so, that goal can’t be from this year!! How’d that happen? haha I agree Hassli’s goal should have been up for consideration but from the lot I’d have to say Neymar’s, which excludes the little shuffle he did to escape two markers prior to the video starting

  32. Nathan says:

messi’s goal was not even worthy of a nomination

  33. Ratty Levrini says:

Not goal here should be compared to Rooney’s. I think all the votes must go for him.

  34. Javier Zanetti says:

I think Messi’s gol against Madrid should have been nominated. It is better than all of the other ones on this list. Stupid FIFA…

  35. BLRBrazil says:

Judged on goal quality alone (ie: not considering occasion or opponents), surely it has to be Giovani and Neymar, in that order. The long shots by Ibrahimovic and Stankovic were superb and difficult to separate (latter was from further out but former was under pressure and keeper in place). I think some people are being unfair to Messi. The through ball was perfect and the deft flick to take it out of the keeper’s reach was brill. By the same token, there’s a lot of knee-jerk approval of Rooney – come on folks, it wasn’t even the best overhead kick! That distinction goes to López, who gave a masterclass in the technique.

  36. Alexis says:

    Don’t count out O’ Reilly’s stunner people.

  37. Anonymous says:

The commentary in the Gio goal is anything but bias. Pablo Ramirez always gives the games a bit of emotion. Imo, its much better than the boring English commentators who say a couple of words every 5 minutes. He yelled the same way when Tevez scored on Mexico during the world cup.

As for the goals, im going with Gomez or Rooney.

  38. common sense says:

Rooneys is a “shin volley” fluke. Could have gone anywhere and flew in off his shin pad. Why on earth people think it deserves an award only FIFA and his sponsors with their huge payments know. Neymar or Stans.

  39. nathan says:

i like julio gomez’s because its in the last minutes of the u17 world cup semis and he dares to take the chilena with his head wrapped

  40. Tamaz says:

Except 1,6,7 all 7 are really good kicks, but 1,6,7 are good goals and one should choose between 6 and 7, cause 1 is not so special. I would choose 6 cause I think it’s the artistic part of the football :) and one should always take into consideration the team that those goals are scored against

  41. Anonymous says:

Great goals but i have to ask where is darren ambrose’s goal for crystal palace vs manchester united not there?
