It’s been a bit of a slow day at the coal face today but thankfully Stoke City have provided us, the footballing public, with a nice little yarn to keep things ticking over.

As you may or may not be aware, Stoke released full-back Andy Wilkinson at the end of the season, thus leaving the 30-year-old full-back clubless for the first time in his career having come through the ranks at the Potters, his hometown club, as a youngster.

Just to make finding a new club that little bit more challenging, Wilkinson – who spent 2014/15 on loan at Millwall – is also currently recovering from a niggling injury he picked up in training during the last few weeks of the season.

As such, Stoke have agreed to re-sign the defender on a rolling week-by-week contract to help tide him over until he, a) recovers from his knock, and, b) finds himself a new suitor.

The deal has been described as a “gesture of goodwill” on Stoke’s part in return for Wilkinson’s 15 years of service to their cause.

Not blockbuster news, we grant you, but pleasing all the same.
