You’ve got to hand it to them, NBC are certainly pulling out all the stops in promoting their coverage of the upcoming Premier League.

After decking out New York subway trains in Premier League club colours, the US channel have produced a rather clever, self-depreciating video clip which lampoons Americans’ supposed lack of knowledge of ‘soccer’.

Starring Jason Sudeikis, star of Horrible Bosses and 30 Rock, plays ‘Ted Lasso’, Tottenham’s new head coach but a man with feck all knowledge of the game of football (insert your own Christian Gross gags here). To be honest, I’ve grown tired of the whole ‘let’s laugh at the Yanks’ lack of football nous’, however this is worth a look!

As an American, this was brilliant. His analogy of Liverpool to the Dallas Cowboys made me sad though. I really love that he is wearing what we call “nut huggers”.

  2. Calm Arsenal Man says:

Should have questioned where all the commercials are in between “plays”. At least he was familiar with all the cheerleaders that are wearing spurs kits :P

  3. Lucas says:

You should really post the full version instead! It’s amazing.

@Lucas – Have done this now, thanks!

I love the bit about England and Wales and ‘how many countries are in this country?’. It amazes me how many Americans don’t comprehend that there is a difference between England and Great Britain.

Of course, it doesn’t help when have players play with English teammates for Great Britain in the Olympics and against England in UEFA and FIFA competitions. And I’m not sure anyone can really understand why some side in Wales play in the Welsh league while others compete in the EPL. Some of the confusion arises not because Americans are clueless or self-centered but because the situation is just confusing.

Wanker: someone that doesn’t mind sitting alone with his thoughts.

On the other hand, no pun intended, can somebody explain to me why Swansea from Wales, supposedly another country, can play for the English Premier League?

  7. Kevin says:

Anabelle – because there used to be much less political separation between Wales and England than there is now, so it made sense for Wales teams to be part of the english football system, so the larger Welsh teams were grandfathered in

  8. porcelain sandwich says:

To be fair usrick, I’m English and I don’t have a fucking clue what I’m an inhabitant of. England, Great Britain, the British Isles and the United Kingdom are all constantly banded around and I just don’t know where I live any more.

  9. Jarren says:

    Haha, that was amazing!

“How many countries ARE there in this country?”

    “…four”

  10. Walter Eagle says:

@Porcelain Sandwich “I just don’t know where I live any more.”. So how does that tie in with “I’m English”?
Apparently you do know enough to proclaim your identity, but you’ve been too lazy to find out how others define theirs?

  11. The Shadow Knows says:

reminds me of the Mary Whitehouse experience take on Soccer from America back in the 1990’s

  12. Herman says:

@Annabelle Because Wales didn’t have a professional league until 1992.
