Tottenham Hotspur 5-3 Chelsea – Premier League – 1st January 2015

Back in 2004, Jose Mourinho commented on Arsenal’s 5-4 win against Tottenham, saying “That was a hockey score, not a football score. I did not see the game but I have to say that the defenders were a disgrace.” Well, at White Hart Lane on New Year’s Day, his own side found themselves on the wrong end of a ‘hockey score’.

Things looked to be going according to plan for the Blues when Diego Costa opened the scoring on 18 minutes. However, Mauricio Pochettino’s Lilywhites were back on level terms on the half-hour, courtesy of a fine Kane strike. Danny Rose then made it 2-1 for the hosts before Andros Townsend converted a spot-kick (after Kane was fouled) to give Spurs a 3-1 lead at the break.

In the second period, star man Kane then made it 4-1 as Chelsea looked headed for a hammering. Eden Hazard did get one back for the Blues only for Nacer Chadli to net another to make the scoreline an incredible 5-2 to the Lilywhites. John Terry managed to get one back at the death but the result will have shocked Jose Mourinho while boosting Tottenham’s Champions League hosts.

Chelsea are now only above Man City in the table alphabetically while Spurs go fifth, two points off a Champions League spot.
