Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Newcastle United – Premier League – 13th December 2015

Spurs suffered their first league defeat since the opening day of the season on Sunday, with the Lilywhites going down 2-1 to strugglers Newcastle at White Hart Lane.

The hosts were sharp from the opening, forcing Magpies’ ‘keeper Rob Elliot into a number of decent saves. The goal eventually came on 39 minutes, with England international Eric Dier heading home from a Christian Eriksen corner.

After the break, Steve McClaren’s men rallied and go back on level terms on 74 minutes, with Serb sub Aleksandar Mitrovic firing home from close-range after a scramble in the Tottenham box. Then, at the death, the visitors secured the victory, with Ayoze Perez firing past Hugo Lloris at the near post.

The win sees the Magpies move out of the drop-zone and up to 15th. As for Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs, they stay fifth, seven points behind league leaders Arsenal.
