A Marcos Alonso brace gave Chelsea their first win of the new season against Tottenham at Wembley on Sunday.

The Blues started with Tiemoue Bakayako in midfield and Alvaro Morata up front, but the Spaniard missed an easy chance early on.

The opening goal would eventually come on 24 minutes, with Alonso producing an outstanding free-kick which left Hugo Lloris with no chance in the Spurs goal.

The Lilywhites, in their first game of the season at their new Wembley home, pushed for an equaliser, with Harry Kane hitting the frame of the goal before the break.

Chelsea’s Brazilian attacker Willian would also hit the post in the second-half in what was an entertaining London derby.

However, the hosts’ good play got the reward it deserved on 82 minutes, with sub Michy Batshuayi heading Christian Eriksen’s free-kick into his own net.

Yet, there was a sting in the tail for Mauricio Pochettino’s men, with Alonso firing home, albeit with a shot which Lloris really should have dealt with.

The win puts Antonio Conte’s title holders back on track after their shock opening day defeat to Burnley.

As for Tottenham, after going unbeaten at home in the league last season, they’ll be hoping that Wembley won’t prove to be a less-than-welcoming home for the rest of 2017/18.
