Champions League Predictions: Real Madrid vs Tottenham

Thanks chiefly to the dreary Interlull that has enveloped the footballing sphere for the past two weeks it seems to have crept up from nowhere, but Tottenham are in the Spanish capital tonight to take on Real Madrid in the first leg of their maiden Champions League quarter-final.

By way of contrast, Madrid are chasing down their 10th European title and look set to roll out a considerable weapon in order to abet their cause against Spurs; one Cristiano Ronaldo – who was always going to make his comeback from a hamstring injury just in time for tonight’s game at the Bernabeu, despite Jose Mourinho’s repeated protestations to the contrary.

Marcelo, Angel Di Maria and Kaka are also available after a flurry of injury doubts, while striker Gonzalo Higuain, who made his return against Sporting Gijon (a 1-0 home defeat that saw Mourinho’s nine-year unbeaten record go down the pan) at the weekend after over four months out with a dislocated spine, is also included in the squad.

Tottenham’s big comeback news is not quite as stellar, though it’s possibly even more important from a Spurs’ standpoint – Gareth Bale trained successfully yesterday evening and will start tonight, while William Gallas is also being tipped to be drafted back into their defense despite a knee problem meaning that he was unable to kick a ball on Friday.

Is it just me, or does that sound like a recipe for disaster?

I concur with that scoreline, Tottenham have been frustrated up front recently and fragile at the back.. well, forever!

On a side note I must say that you are running this site exceptionally well considering Ollie’s departure. It still remains one of the first sites I click on at the start of the day, well done Chris!

Let me know if you ever need any help ;)

    Thanks pal. Much appreciated!

  3. Mr Mac says:

You almost expect a massive trashing of tottenham on bernabeu.

    I predict a more modest 2-1 / 3-1 for Real.

And not a “controlled outstanding outplayed” barcelona kind of win of arsenal.

And also, mad props to chris.
I haven’t really felt any difference at all from ollie’s absence, as a “foreign” lurker here ;)

I can see Spurs scoring to be honest. This is the Champions League, it’s never straightforward! Spurs to take a shock early lead inside the first ten minutes and then Madrid to pull it back to 2 – 1 on the night, setting up a pant-wettingly exciting second leg! :)

Interesting, spurs defence is so fragile that they prevented Milan, with a mixture of Pato, Robinho and Ibrahimovic, from scoring.

    3-1 for me.

  9. MaxMad says:

Ronaldo is probably going to run circles around the Spurs defense, but I predict a 2-2 result for tonight, with Spurs being up 2-0, and Real notching a brace to salvage their dignity.

  10. V says:

Dawson and Gallas fragile? Diametrically, I reckon Real will have a hard time scoring and Spurs will look menacing on the counterattack.

Anyways, I concur with Luke, Chris.

And btw what has happened with Ollie?

Also Chris, the site has veered away from being a closet Spurs blog over the last few months! Nice work.

  12. Adam FJ says:

9/1 with William Hill that Spurs come from behind to draw or win. I fancy a 1-1, madrid scoring first.

  13. Chris says:

Aw, stop it guys. I’m (s)welling up!

@V: After years of Grade A work on Pies, Ollie landed a great new gig over at ITV Football.

  14. Luke says:

As you can see we all appreciate it so keep it up. Must admit I am a bit saddened by the loss of the premier league prediction game (although I sucked) so I hope that makes a return next season.

  15. Liam E says:

From an unconditionally unbias point of view…I think it could be a solid 3-1 to Spurs (with real opening the scoring though)

    And yeah, nice work chris.
