See how far kick-and-charge can get you? Tottenham winger Gareth Bale was crowned the PFA Player of the Year at the Grosvenor Hotel yesterday, during a shindig that also saw Arsenal’s midfield tyro Jack Wilshere take home the PFA’s Young Player of the Year gong.

For my money, Nemanja Vidic was robbed, but the fact is that defenders, no matter how unwaveringly consistent over the course of a campaign, still tend to be criminally undersold when it comes to handing out the end-of-season trinkets.

A lot has been made of Bale’s relative lack of top flight goals and, especially, assists in comparison with the un-nominated Nani (Bale: 7 goals/1 assist, Nani: 9 goals/18 assists) but when you’ve got Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe and Roman Pavlyuchenko to rely on to convert your pinpoint centres then you can just about forgive him the odd statistical anomaly.

Said Bale upon receiving his award:

”I am more than delighted really. It is a massive award and it is a great honour to receive, especially from other fellow professionals.

“It is a honour really when you look at the names that have won it before and it just makes you go ‘wow’ really.

”There haven’t been too many Welshman to have won the trophy but it is great and it is great for me personally – and it is not just for me, it is for all my team-mates that have helped me through the season and it is kind of for everyone really.”

The PFA Premier League Team of the Year was also announced and read thusly:

Edwin van der Sar (Man Utd)
Bacary Sagna (Arsenal)
Ashley Cole (Chelsea)
Nemanja Vidic (Man Utd)
Vincent Kompany (Man City)
Nani (Man Utd)
Samir Nasri (Arsenal)
Jack Wilshere (Arsenal)
Gareth Bale (Tottenham)
Carlos Tevez (Man City)
Dimitar Berbatov (Man Utd)

  1. St Michael says:

    I’m glad for Webb.

But wtf is wrong with the judges?

Vidic isn’t even in the top 3. Fucktards.

P.S : Aand where is Baines ? Cole left back of the year ? REALLY?

  2. Acton_Yid says:

Cashley over Baines is a massive JOKE !

  3. :) says:

i’m a bit shattered scott parker didn’t win it, but i’m happy for bale. he comes across as a nice bloke.

  4. Arthur says:

How did parker and baines not make the team of the season??

  5. Conor O'Riordan says:

Absolute bullshit. How Scott Parker and Leighton Baines didn’t make the team is beyond me. And please everyone ask yourself, if not for one evening in Milan would Bale have won the player of the year? Ridiculous he got in ahead of Nani/Nasri/Tevez/Vidic/Modric.

Also, I thought Peter Odemwingie has been absolutely brilliant this year. Anyone agree he should have been in with a shout?

  6. David says:

What is actually a shocker is that the PFA is almost always awarded to a domestic (or UK-based) player. Rarely does it go to a foreigner. Yes, CR won it twice but if they hadn’t given it to him, then it would have been a complete robbery.

  7. Arthur says:

Bale has done zilch in the PL, wilshere deserved it. Howard Webb is a disgrace.

Ashley Cole should be at the back of the queue
Parker – an average playing who’s made too look better because of how poor his club is. same for adam.

@Conor O’Riodrdan – modric is awful and odemwingie is terrrible.

Some people, im glad your not one of the judges, all the bottom half players in the team of the year comical.

  8. V says:

This reminds me of Sneijder not even making it to the top 3 last year.

    just ridiculous.

I even prefer Bale to Nani when it comes to playing the game but there are 2 goals and SEVENTEEN!!!!!!11ONE!!!1111 ASSISTS telling them apart.

    SEVENTEEN!

  11. Lex says:

    Bale is Awesome!

  12. Conor O'Riordan says:

    @Arthur

Modric is awful and Odemwingie is terrible?? What league have you been watching all season? Modric has been consistently excellent in Spurs’ midfield all season and Odewingie has 12 goals for a team who up until recently were fighting relegation!! Two class players.
