Chelsea Prepared To Offload Fernando Torres, But Is He Still Worth £20m?

Not that we’re giving it much credence, but word in the Daily Mail this morning is that Chelsea are prepared to listen to offers for Fernando Torres come January in a bid to cut their losses as £50 million’s worth of doleful Spaniard slips ever-further down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.

As can be expected with these kind of things, there’s no official word from Chelsea themselves, just an ‘understanding’ that Roman Abramovich is willing to let Nando go on his way should any club be willing to stump up £20 million and match the striker’s £150,000-a-week wages. Would anyone be willing to take that gamble?

The explosive, unplayable Fernando Torres of 2007/09 is long gone and it’s my belief that he ain’t coming back – Rafa Benitez’ over-reliance on him has pretty much put paid to that – but it’s fair to say that, despite having lost his ‘world class edge’, Torres is still a very good forward. Restored of confidence and played regularly in the right system, you’re still looking at a 15+ goal-a-season man with the wind behind him. Hell, he was looking decent this season until Daniel Sturridge started looking that bit more decent-er.

Given today’s hyper-inflated prices, £20 million represents a bit of a snip for a man with proven (if dormant) kwality and, if that really is Cheslea’s going rate, you’d have to wager that someone will dip their bread. Dare I mention that Liverpool are in need a striker? Could you just imagine?

What say you folks? Reckon Nando’s still worth £20 million of anybody’s money? Will he be on his way in January? And if so, where do you see him pitching up?

I’d take him back at Anfield. He’d get some goals alongside Suarez. Put Carroll in the ressies until he gets going.

  2. Davy says:

He should come to Newcastle and flourish and watch Carroll go in the opposite direction at Liverpool…..Never ever happen though

  3. peter beardsley says:

    he is a poo

  4. Jay says:

I honestly can’t see him leaving Chelsea in January, they’ve invested 50 million in the man. Do Chelsea cut their losses now or give him more time? Hard to say but I reckon he’ll be there till the end of the season at least.

  5. Rob says:

I don’t anybody wants him and definitely not for 20 million. I think Chelsea are stuck with him until Atletico Madrid might buy him back for pennies on the dollar.

  6. Milkchew says:

Swap deal with Atletico Madrid for Falcao who AVB coached, brilliantly, at Porto. Hes a beast of a goals machine him.

  7. MrMac says:

I can’t imagine him going to italian football.

I reckon like rob, it’s probably going back to the childhood club, perhaps another spanish club like sevilla or valencia.

No one in premier league would risk such a jan transfer.

I’d wager he has the champions league finals to prove him self, but if not he WILL be off in janaury.

  8. Ian says:

    Tottenham.

He’s happy to sit on the bench. – Wasteman

  10. Col says:

Incey has been talking of the red half of Manchester being in need of a new striker…

  11. Pkhakheria says:

    Qpr!

  12. Robin says:

@MrMac it seems like you are almost saying that chelsea will be in the champions league final. I sniggered a bit.

He is still a good player, he would flourish at a mid table club with no pressure. Maybe even tottenham, but I don’t believe he will plying his trade in England much longer.

  13. Meta says:

    @Robin

I don’t think “MrMac” was suggesting that Chelsea would be in the Final. But more the Final(s) as in the latter stages (that we are in now!!). Technically Final(s) means Quarters and Semis but I think “MrMac” meant that Torres needs to prove his worth in the round matches right now!!!

    Perhaps I’m wrong.

  14. Degs says:

He’s probably only worth £20 million if Liverpool re-sign him (as that would represent essentially £30 million for a 12 month loan!).

I can’t see the Liverpool fans wanting him back though, or anyone spending that much on him on current form.

  15. __wowza says:

just like managers try to stray away from players who have a “flash in the pan” season, i reckon there would be more than a few who believe his current form is a slump, a lack of service, or a formation issue.

i could see him leaving and possibly regaining form elsewhere, possibly QPR :D

  16. Archbishop Betty Snagcock says:

i reckon psg, he’ll nearly earn that back in shirt sales an he’ll bang them in in France

  17. RyanSSL says:

I honestly think a move to Spain or Italy would be the best for Torres. He needs to get out of England and start over. The problem is that teams in Spain (Besides Real & Barca) and Italy don’t have the money that English clubs have. A move to a team like Inter would be interesting for Torres. Milito and Pazzini are really struggling and they don’t have much depth at striker.

  18. plainswalker75 says:

    Torres to MLS!

  19. WildScotsman6 says:

I think Chelsea is smart here. Don’t sell him, loan him out. Best case senario is that he finds his form with another team and brings back loads of confidence and gets back to his old ways. Worse case, he keeps the same shite goal record and Chelsea make a bit of money out of it.

  20. Lily says:

I don’t think Chelsea will be selling him. They invested too much money on him. Just give the guy some time, all the pressure is killing his game.

  21. HotSpur922 says:

    LOL @ “Tottenham”

    we don’t need that garbage.

  22. Fat Nakago says:

One of the things that makes no sense to me about Nando leaving in January is that Drogba will be gone for the Africa Cup of Nations. Soooo….who’s going to fill the Drogman’s place in the lineup? Lukaku??

And if Lukaku is the plan, then why not give HIM more playing time? Why trot Nando out for a warm-up cameo like they did when Drogma took a knock early in the Man City game?

As I alluded to in my blog http://www.themagicworld.org/bloog/?p=3523 ,AVB must be cooking up SOME sort of mad scientist scheme regarding Torres. Selling him right now really makes no sense.

  23. df says:

id swap him for carroll. same number of goals, and carroll is younger lol

  24. Mr. Sparkle says:

Why does Torres have a hard on?

  25. Ty says:

Id wager he will be heading back to A. Madrid.

  26. Dave Macbeth says:

He’s been underperforming for too long now for it to be classed as a blip.

  27. Marvin says:

He should go to Spurs… Harry will put his arm around him, give him a bit of a cuddle and tell him he’s still good, just get out there and **cking run about a bit.
