Van Persie Rumours Point To Rooney-esque U-Turn, But Would Arsenal Fans Be Happy?

After seemingly burning his bridges with Arsenal courtesy of a rather blunt statement, Dutch striker Robin Van Persie is now rumoured to be pondering penning a new deal with the Gunners.

Most of these rumours are coming courtesy of Sky Sports News, and and may be a load of old tosh. However, RVP wouldn’t be the first footballer to announce he was fecking off due to a ‘disillusionment’ wth his club, before ultimately pulling a 180 and signing a new deal with the same club. Hirsute granny-magnet Wayne Rooney did just that at Man Utd and no-one seems to hold it against him now. But would Gooners be happy if the attacker bedded in at the Emirates for a few more seasons, despite his rant?

A forward line of Podolski, Giroud and Van Persie (with Walcott, the Ox and Gervinho in reserve) does look quite tasty. However, maybe Arsenal are better of cashing in on the 28-year-old injury-prone star now anyway. Thoughts?

    Mixed opinions to be honest.

Give it one or two matches of pre-season, they’ll usually decide on his season being either a goal-filled one or an injury-blighted one.

Act accordingly, just don’t give him to us. I hate the man.

  2. Baz says:

van Persie u-turn? Good. We’ll cheer him. He’ll score. Respect? That’s another thing.

  3. bryan briggs says:

gerrard did the same with chelsea when mourinho was there

  4. Bill says:

I think it’s less burnt and more napalmed the fuck out out those bridges.

  5. Block 104 says:

I would be delighted if he stays!
I think he said he would not sign a new contract; not that he wanted to leave. This always left it open to stay if the problems were resolved.

  6. dave says:

If i was a gunner which im not i would be more than happy with this.Quality player.

  7. Anonymous says:

If any Arsenal fan is against this then they are a jackass. By far one of the most talented players to ever play for the club and has done a ton for the club itself. Would accept him back with open arms.

  8. Tommy says:

Dave I totally agree. I am an Arsenal fan and I believe we want trophees. RVP is way to good we need him, and come on last season he was our hero!

  9. Felix says:

That is a good one gunners until i die

  10. Allan says:

@Baz – thats how I feel about him now.

The damage he’s done to the club now and really its hard to imagine he can have another season like that make me think maybe hes better off just leaving. The last 6ish games of the season then the Euros shows theres no guarantees with him as does the first 7 seasons at the club.

Saying that If he does u-turn and we keep him I would still back him just not to the extend I did.

  11. Gunner Matt says:

Once the season starts and if he is even half as good as he was last year we will have forgotten this whole debacle. It was his agents statement, not Robin’s after all.

  12. PumaYaYa says:

Being a footballer is just another job ppl, just like the ones you and I work at. If something better comes along, I’ll leave.

  13. usrick says:

Arsenal would be fine without him, better with him, but the chances of another great season like 2011-2012 seem slight in view of his history of injuries. Were it up to me, I’d sell him now, while the money is good. I could live with Podolski, Giroud, Walcott, Ox and Gervinho to choose from up front (though I wish Gervinho would get rid of that hair net that makes him look so weird).

  14. Rooney and Tevez have shown that fans will accept players back from this type of situation provided they show some sort of form. I’m sure Arsenal fans would prefer to see Van Persie back down and continue with them than turn up at Eastlands.

  15. Bill Woodham says:

Like any arsenal fan it’s very disappointing to learn that having supported RVP in all the ups and downs that after one outstanding season he feels it’s time to move on. However we must not forget that RVP’s family are here and very settled and men should never under estimate the power of a woman. He’s tried and tested and I feel that we would be a better team with him in it! normally I would say if the mans heart ain’t with the club then let him go but let’s just have a look back, his goals came as a result of the team behind him. If its about playing football week in week out and being the main man the captain of our club then surely Arsenal is the place for him. What we must absolutely not do is strengthen our competition! And if he really sulks then keep him! Let him then find a big money move in 12 months time …

  16. plops says:

If he stays, fans will say they still don’t want him. And then when he scores a few they’ll forget they ever said it and say they always knew he’d stay and they love him. Because that’s what football fans are like. They’d cheer Hitler if he was any good at football. All is forgotten if you can score us a couple of goals Adolf!

  17. Dave says:

I for one as a United fan haven’t forgotten Rooneys “u-turn” and neither have a lot of others. In fact the other day, we were laughing because the season ticket renewal came with a picture of Rooney and “100% committed” stamped on it!

Footballers don’t lose your cub like you do. Rooney is an Everton fan in a United shirt and RVP doesn’t “love” arsenal even if he signs.

  18. brodea says:

@brian briggs Are you living in an alternate universe? I’m pretty sure Gerrard has played his entire career with Liverpool, and has never been managed by TSO. WTF?

  19. Scott says:

think VP had season of his career at the Gunners, as captain and after the worrying start Arsenal had he turned it around and got Champions League football at The Emirates again. Turning 29 next month he might not have many more years left in the top flight but if he can continue his goalscoring prowess of last season he can win titles at any club anywhere.

  20. Captain Obvious says:

I love Robin. The bell he rang can’t be unrung thought. Unless he wants to sign a reasonable 3 year deal, the let’s sell him for as much as we can get outside the EPL and get ourselves a midfield or defensive star. I would love to take Modrich from Sp*rs, for instance.

  21. WTF? says:

@brodea What are you talking about? brian briggs was refering to the fact that Steven Gerrard said he was on his bike to Chelsea so he could negotiate a better contract at Liverpool way back in 2005. Thats why people chant Chelsea Rentboy at him.

  22. One England Captain says:

Think it would be hilarious if he signed a new deal then got injured again making this whole debate redundant.

  23. lurker says:

if it means getting a steady back four, let RVP go. so tired of looking great up front while giving up soft goals on the counter.

  24. C0ckD0g says:

I would open his arms. Wait….I would welcome him with open arms. Is that how it goes? I dress myself.

  25. Graham says:

I am so so glad I support another team, because I could not bare to be associated with some of these whiny, overdramatic Gooners who had themselves a little fit that RVP was tired of carrying the majority of that squad and thought about moving to a club with overall better talent.

  26. Anonymous says:

I think RVP has figured it out. If you look at recent history, it seems to be quite hard to swap teams as a striker. There is far too much risk especially with his injury prone history. I also think he is slightly under impressed with the amount of teams showing interest.

  27. Ollie says:

Wow everyones going on about hes amazing hes made arsenal bla bla bla i am an arsenal fan and yes ok he played a great season this year but how many goals did he score the year before and the year before he is an outstanding player and i would love to see him at the club longer but is it going to be another injury free season ??
