According to Sports Illustrated‘s website, in the wake of the World Cup ‘many Americans are searching for a world superclub to support’. SI writer Grant Wahl suggests that their choice ‘may as well be talent-laden Chelsea’. God help us. Wahl himself chose to support Chelsea in 1998: one of the reasons he gives for this arbitrary choice is that when he interviewed Marcel Desailly and Frank Leboeuf, ‘they seemed like cool guys’. Great reason, Grant.

There’s something very distasteful about Chelsea’s ‘please like me’ tour of the States. They’ve been out there for ages and yet they’re only going to play one match, against an MLS all-star team tomorrow – hardly a fulfilling pre-season tour for the players. Instead, we’ve been treated to the bizarre sight of Chelsea players partying in Los Angeles with Snoop Dogg, Venus Williams and Tony Blair. This all smacks of an arrogant club that believes its own hype. As Frank Lampard showed in Germany, that’s a very dangerous thing to do.
