Michel
Michel ‘Mental’ Platini, once one of the greatest players in the universe has failed to impress me with his ideas to make football more beautiful as UEFA President. He’s already said that he’d like a limit of three Champions League places per country, and now the Frenchman has now put forward a proposal for games to be officiated by three referees.

Instead of introducing video technology, Platini wants to experiment with two additional penalty area ‘referees’ to assist the usual contingent of match officials. The proposal will be discussed in full at UEFA’s annual general meeting next month.
"Two more officials would definitely help to clear up misunderstandings," a spokesman told The Daily Telegraph. "Platini does not want to break up the flow of games with video technology, but he is keen to see a new system and possible experiments." [Mof Gimmers]

What nonsense! Does football want to go the way of American football, with countless officials all throwing flags at once and slowing the game down? Of course not.

Ed, American football tends to get things right far more often than not. While nobody wants to slow down the pace of play, most would prefer refs get the important calls right.
Perhaps two refs isn’t the way to go, but exploring any option that improves officiating can’t be a bad thing.

Why not try scrapping the offside rule? Just think how many disputes that would solve. As a more feasible suggestion how about making the 4th official more pro-active by sitting in the stand and communicating with the ref and being available for consultation. If the managers want to squabble just let them get on with it. The linesman (whoops) could sort out the substitutes

Football will be unrecognizable if Blatter and Platini get to implement half of what they’d like to. The goals will be an extra foot high, all fouls especially on Portuguese will result in a sending off, any emotion after scoring a goal will result in a sending off, Wayne Rooney making a scary face will result in … a sending off, etc.
