Soccer - Barclays Premier League - Liverpool v Swansea City - Anfield

Being the crafty devils that they are, Arsenal tabled a £40,000,001 offer for Luis Suarez last night with the extraneous penny thought to be designed to trigger a clause in the Uruguayan’s Liverpool contract that meant the club had to inform the striker of the bid.

However, the clause didn’t/doesn’t state that Liverpool have to accept the offer, and they jolly well didn’t either – with owner John W Henry quipping “what do you think they’re smoking over there at Emirates?” after announcing he’d rejected the bid on Twitter.

Anyhow, that’s now two bids Liverpool have rejected for Suarez from Arsenal and you’ve got to wonder what they’re holding out for – £40million is a lot of money to knock back – though we’re guessing ‘Pool are waiting until “Cavani-esque” money is slapped on the table (£50-55million) before they even countenance doing business.

They might well be holding out for a ‘Cavani-esque’ offer (i.e. £50-£55m) but I don’t think he’ll ever be a player that warrants a bid like that from one of the world’s top clubs. He’s a phenomenal talent, sure, and he’s just had an outstanding season where he’s proven that he’s one of the top strikers in Europe (if not the world), but his past indiscretions (which, let’s face it, have happened with alarming regularity) mean that a £50-£55m offer would represent a huge risk for a potential buying club. How would that be good value for money if Suarez does something else that’s unthinkable on a football field (racist abuse of a fellow professional, horror tackles, biting, what next?) and becomes unavailable for a lengthy period of time due to being banned? Football clubs have to think about their reputations when bringing in players, and Suarez is a player that is always likely to be a blight on how a club is perceived by fans, the media, the world.

You may call the offer cheeky, but I say it is totally disrespectful from what was previously a well respected manager, As far as i’m concerned he’s now classed alongside Old Red Nose, but I doubt even he would stoop so low.

  3. DoodleMaster says:

That’s a hilarious tweet indeed. What do you think they’re smoking at the Emirates, Chris?

    Gauloises, surely..?

  5. Dominic says:

It’s a very good ploy on Arsenal’s part. Suarez has now been told that there is an offer that will enable him to join a championship league team. By rejecting the offer Liverpool are barring him from the competition. If Liverpool fail to make the top 4 this coming season they will have a very disgruntled player on their hands.

Apparently it was just 40m for Suarez the extra pound was for Downing…

  7. John-W-Henry says:

“I can’t believe that stupid Frenchie and his commie chairman Uzbekisaninov thinks he can steal our best goalkicker with a forty million + one dollar offer – doesn’t he know Lewis is one of the best soccerball players in all of Europa?!”

  8. Mr Sensible says:

Is it just me or is this a stupid and completely pointless clause?

Are you telling me had Arsenal only bid say £35m there would have been no way of Suarez finding out through the media or his agent?

  9. Mike says:

Tqke the money Brendan – £40M buys you a load of Swansea players.

What was JW smoking when they bought Carroll for £35 Mil.

  10. TravisKOP says:

I’d bet my left ankle if Madrid or anyone outside the PL bid 40 mil he’d already have passed their medical
