If Ajax coach Frank De Boer is to be believed (and why on Earth would you doubt him?), Tottenham agreed a deal to sign prodigiously talent young Danish forward Christian Eriksen, reportedly for the low, low price of just €10million.

Speaking to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaph, De Boer said: “His departure is a huge loss, because Christian is terribly important. We always have and always will get along. He is an ideal footballer and professional, he is ideal for any coach.”

The deal is a way off being completed yet, but Spurs have been granted permission to talk to Eriksen after Ajax accepted an offer from Daniel Levy, rumoured to be as low as £8million – which seems like madness to us, especially as the Dane is pretty much Ajax’s most vaunted player these days.

We suspect that there will a shed-load of add-ons and bonuses added into the contract when the time comes, but even so – it looks like Spurs are getting themselves another bargain, though their “diminutive attacking midfielders” department is starting to look a tad swollen.

You’d have to assume that Eriksen’s arrival will mean that the likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson, Lewis Holtby and Tom Carroll will be allowed to leave on loan over the next few weeks.

Any road up, that’s Roberto Soldado, Nacer Chadli, Etienne Capoue, Paulinho, Vlad Chiriches, Erik Lamela, (who both flew into London yesterday) and Eriksen, all for roughly the price of one Gareth Bale. The net spend on transfer fees will be something like £5/6million.

You’ve got to give it to Daniel Levy; he’s bloody well earned his money these past few months. All he’s got to do know is somehow conjure up a buyer for Emmanuel Adebayor and Spurs fans will be left toasting the perfect summer!

Arsenal fans must be crying into their Cheerios this morning.

  4. jim says:

Measly? The player is already into the last year of his contract he could sign a pre contract with a club in january or leave for nothing next may. That being the case £9m is good business for Ajax and it is a lot more than £0.

  5. Apple says:

Referring to Eriksen as diminutive is pretty funny. Maybe in Amsterdam he is… but he’s probably over average height in the UK!

    • Matt Daug says:

Diminutive? He sure is. Sorry to break it to you mate, but wiki has him listed at 5’9” and last time I checked, that’s pretty small for an adult male. Again, apologies for your shortcomings.

  6. dan says:

Great article, the adebayor bit made me laugh ;) dont forgot we sold Caulker and Parker for roughly 10 mil so if anything weve made a profit! COYS!!!

  7. IanWrong says:

All of these players are average just, like Cavani and Eto and Falcao and Bernard and Isco and Neymar – Arsene was right, there’s very little quality out there that could improve upon Bendter, Jenkinson, Diaby n co…. (right??)

  8. Stu says:

Good read this!! Your right! Although its been the transfer window of dreams, my biggest cheer will be when that lanky togo slings his hook. COYS

  10. Doctor's Your Uncle says:

    Diminutive? He’s 5 ft 9!

    • Chris says:

@Doctor’s Your Uncle: ….and weighs about 3 stone wet through.

Trust me; when you’re a 7ft, 500lb giant like me, everyone seems a bit diminutive.

  11. Mokum says:

The figure isn’t surprising with one year left on his contract. What is surprising is that Overmars allowed Spurs to spread payments over 4 terms. Pointless.

  12. TravisKOP says:

GOD DAMMIT. Spurs is killing it in the transfer market and Liverpool has signed a bunch of unproven players. We should have pulled the trigger on eriksen when we had the bloody chance to and now liverpool will miss out on YET ANOTHER key player on the cheaps

  13. Steve-o says:

It pleases me to see the Spurs and Napoli’s of the world greatly strengthening their squads from the single-player sales to the oil barons and banks.
I hope this evolution continues and the PSGs and Monacos crash and burn even quicker than their Anzhi predecessors.

    • Jim says:

You have no idea what you’re talking about if you say stuff like ‘instant profit’. It’s all about long-term sustainability. Or did you assume the insane TV and sponsorship deals clubs get in England are the same everywhere? Selling the players is the return you get out of a process this nation is good at. Or did you think Ajax would win the CL with Eriksen there for one more year?

  14. Jarren says:

Bloody Ajax, always selling their best players!

Every time Ajax get a good squad together (and not just one that can challenge for the Eredivisie) they sell them!

Dutch teams need to grow some balls and say no to instant profit.

  15. Peters says:

I guess Spurs will be playing a 2-7-1 formation this season?

  16. Jarren says:

@Jim: Fair play, mate. Hadn’t thought of it like that.

  17. Joe says:

@TravisKOP, he wouldn’t have gone to Liverpool, Too much of a step down from Ajax.

@Jarren, the next time you go back to 1998, could you make a few bets for me?

Also, although he had one year left on his contract, he’d already promised to sign a new contract if he wasn’t going to be sold this season, so the pre-contract in january idea is rubbish.
