It’s been quite possibly the worst kept secret in football, but today LA Galaxy have officially confirmed that Steven Gerrard will be playing his football at the Stubhub Centre come July.

Galaxy coach Bruce Arena let the news slip during an interview with the LA Times newspaper.

“Steven Gerrard arrives in July and by then we will certainly have a plan available,” said Arena.

“He’s a player of quality. I’m not concerned about how he’s going to fit in with our team.

“We have a club now with a proven history of success.

All those things go hand in hand in making LA Galaxy a very attractive team for players such as Steven Gerrard.”

Galaxy president Chris Klein also waxed lyrical about his new signing, describing the Liverpool stalwart as the “perfect” fit for his MLS franchise.

“We just started thinking in the universe of players that are out there, we want to make a decision on what signifies a Galaxy-designated player,” he waffled.

“When we look at that, Steven Gerrard is the perfect fit with what he brings to us on the field and the character that he has off it.”

Rounding off the LA Times article was a few quotes from the man himself, who told the paper the fact Galaxy have won three of the last four MLS titles was the clincher in his decision to join them.

“I think it’s a match made in heaven really,” said Gerrard.

“One of the reasons I chose LA Galaxy was because of the success they’ve had recently.

“I want to finish my career very strong. I want to add some medals and trophies to my collection.”

No sniggering at the back, Manchester United fans.

  1. Jim says:

I fully expect him to struggle. The loss of his legs along with the summer weather, periodic turf fields, and the travel will require more than what he has left in the tank.

  2. Jarren says:

@Jim: Struggle or not, he will rake in $$$ for LA Galaxy.

Plus, a player of Gerrard’s stature will generate megabucks for MLS through broadcasting, advertising, sponsorship…

    The list goes on.

So it doesn’t really matter if he finds it a bit hot in July, or if his legs aren’t what they used to be.

Just by BEING THERE he will be a success for club & league.
