Gone fishin’

One in the eye for quixotic Liverpool fans this afternoon with the news that the object of their wildest fantastical managerial desire, Jurgen Klopp, has announced he will be stepping away from football for the foreseeable future.

After bowing out with a DFB Pokal final defeat to Wolfsburg at the weekend, Klopp – who has also been linked with even less likely moves to West Ham and Bournemouth – says he now plans to rest up on hiatus to decompress after “seven intense and emotional years” at the Borussia Dortmund helm.

According to ITV Football, Klopp made the decision after consulting with his agent Marc Kosicke this morning.

“After seven intense and emotional years, I think it’s a good idea to let the numerous memories settle in before I take on a new challenge with my coaching team, refreshed and fully motivated,” Klopp said in a statement published by German news agency SID.

“I’m going to take a break until further notice.”
