Turns out Danny Ings’ big move to Liverpool isn’t quite as complete as we first thought, with news today that the Burnley striker’s transfer has hit the buffers as the two clubs continue to quibble about his fee.

Even though Ings’ contract is now as good as expired at Burnley, the club are still entitled to compensation from Liverpool due to his age. As such, the Professional Football Compensation Committee (PFCC) are currently busy coming up with a suitable price.

Liverpool were hoping to snag Ings on a bargain deal but now face the prospect of having the fee bumped up above the £5million mark after Burnley revealed they have formally accepted a late £12million bid from Tottenham for the 22-year-old striker.

Sneaky, Mr Levy. Very sneaky!

This from the Independent:

Brendan Rodgers’ side have been very confident since January that [Ings] would sign for them but Tottenham’s late bid for the player will be taken into consideration if a tribunal meets to decide the fee.

Though Ings has no interest in joining Spurs, Burnley can cite the higher offer, as well as the player’s contribution for them, as relevant factors for consideration if the case comes before a Professional Football Compensation Committee (PFCC).

It’s also being reported that Burnley are holding out for £7-8million despite Ings being out of contract.

Liverpool are now attempting to hammer out a club-to-club agreement with the Clarets in an effort to avoid the wrangling going to a tribunal.

The plot thickens. We’ll keep you posted.

Liverpool are the sneaky ones, trying to lure a £20m player away from another English club, without having to pay for him.

    • Chris says:

@Troggy: Ings is out of contract though. Burnley are only entitled to any money at all (i.e, compensation) because he’s currently in the England U21 set-up.

  2. Pj says:

Liverpool tap up Bentelab, lol Levy bids £12m for a player Spurs don’t want! Liverpool have to pay and extra £3/4m for being sneaky buggers lmao! Love it!
He’s a squad player at best, LFC need a much better striker than Ings to take them for forward, he’s a decent player mind. Good luck to him and the scousers!

  3. Si says:

I’m not surprised that the Liverpool board is keeping control of the purse strings. After all, Rodgers delivered absolutely no value whatsoever for the equivalent of a small country’s national debt last season.

  4. Jamie says:

Spurs put their bid in a couple of weeks ago

  5. Degs says:

The Spurs bid is irrelevant as the fee will be set by a tribunal.
It only comes into play if Ings decides to join Spurs instead.
