Cypriot striker scores 16 goals in one game

sweet-sixteen.jpgOlympos Xylofagou striker Panagiotis Pontikos scored an astonishing 16 (sixteen) goals as his side thrashed SEK Ayios Athanasios 24-3 in the Cypriot third division this weekend. That’s six more goals than Man City scored all season at home.
‘I cannot remember a result like that in all the years I have been involved with football,’ said a Cyprus Football Association official. ‘The same goes for the amount of goals scored by the player.’
Is this a world record in competitive football? We think it probably is, but any hard evidence is welcome… [Via The Offside]

It might be an individual record for goals in one game, and a record for goals in a league game.
The official record for a world cup qualifier is Australia 31 – 0 American Samoa in 2001. Archie Thompson scored 13 goals in that game.

i actually play in the third division and know this dude. the team they where playing hadn’t played their players for about 5 months so i think things might have gone a bit crazy in that game. i heard about it after our match. it was the last match of the season aswell.
