There we were, merrily going about our morning; bright of eye, ruddy of cheek. Nae a cloud in the sky nor a care in the world.
Then, then came the awful news through…
Vergini loaned to Spanish club – http://t.co/Jp87mloZsu pic.twitter.com/s43PHSROsZ

The Spanish club in question being Getafe, who have snaffled Vergini up on a one-year loan deal.
And so, just a year and a half since he came clattering into our lives like a newborn Patagonian foal taking its first clumsy steps out onto a frozen lake, Vergini is leaving us again. Cold, naked and alone.
To be fair, his work on these shores is definitely done, as Vergini will forever be remembered for his absolutely astonishing own-goal in the great Sunderland side of October 2014’s heroic 8-0 defeat against Southampton..
Mmmm. The excellence of execution.
Vergini wasn’t just a one-trick pony though, oh no. Indeed, how people can overlook his world class feign against Tottenham the previous season is beyond us…
Befuddling. That’s the word. Utterly, utterly befuddling.
So long Santiago, we heardly knew ye – though we definitely saw enough to form some fairly damning opinions.
