Man City have burned through another £52million to sign left-back Benjamin Mendy from Monaco.

The 23-year-old has signed a five-year deal at City and has flown out to Los Angeles to meet his new teammates for the first time…

Mendy’s arrival comes as the latest in a slew of expensive defensive signings for City, with Pep Guardiola clearing out his old guard over the summer.

Replacing Gael Clichy, Alex Kolarov and Bacary Sagna are Kyle Walker (£45million), Danilo (£27million) and now Mendy (£52million).

Factor in goalkeeper Ederson at £35million and you’re looking at an outlay of around £159million – all for defensive players and all in a matter of weeks.

After struggling to fully implement his preferred systems last season, Pep wasted precisely zero time in rectifying the situation.

124 million on 3 fullbacks. Absolutely mind boggling. Can’t wait to see them playing in midfield after Pep “converts” them.

All hail Pep Guardiola, the ultimate chequebook manager.
