Gerard Pique has signed a new contract extension with Barcelona, tying him to the club until the year Earthly civilisation finally disintegrates entirely, 2022.

Barca have also thrown a frankly astounding release clause into the four-and-a-half year deal, set at €500million.

Yes, you read that correctly: Five hundred million euros.

Having entered La Masia as a 10-year-old back in 1997, Pique – now 30 – has gone on to make over 400 appearances for Barca, yielding 25 major trophies in the process.

With a sky-high release clause like that, it’s fairly safe to say he’s going to be there a while longer.

I don’t think many teams would activate even a €50 Mil clause on Pique, let alone one that is 10 times that. He just isn’t that good.

forget football for a minute, can you imagine a company buying an asset from a rival firm, like a printing press or fleet of trucks etc, for €500million?? incredible and frankly, absurd!

  3. Los Pollos says:

I would not buy him for 30m, let alone 500m….. a defender that can’t defend. He’s an older version of John Stones. Quick, tall, good passing, good header but can’t…. er…. defend.

Barça are putting a few players on such a release. Sergi Roberto has just extended his contract with the same €500 mill clause. It’s to stop PSG (or others) from taking them a la Neymar with higher wages than Barça are willing to pay.
