As you may well have seen, Inter Milan reportedly called off their negotiations with Arturo Vidal earlier this week after gleaning via some back channel that they might be in with a chance of luring Luka Modric from Real Madrid.

Despite his current deal running until 2020, Modric is said to be angling for an extension to his contract at Los Blancos – one last big gig, as it were.

The Spanish club, however, are reluctant to grant such a large outlay to a player who turns 33 this September, and have therefore offered a simple wage increase instead.

Inter saw this as their window to pounce, nixing preparatory talks with Vidal as a result. The Chilean has since all but tied up a move to Barcelona with an announcement due promptly, leaving the Nerazzurri with all their eggs shovelled into a largely delusional basket.

However, the Modric portcullis hasn’t come fully down in front of them, with Real president Florentino Perez explaining that the Italian club still have one means by which they could enter negotiations with the vaunted Croatian midfielder.

Indeed, the only minor drawback is that it’ll be bloody astronomically expensive for them.

Asked by reporters in Miami whether he was aware of Inter’s purported interest in Modric, Perez drily responded:

The only chance that Modric leaves us is if someone pays his €750million release clause.

That’s somewhere up around the £670million mark in old money.

Still… it’s not a ‘no’, now is it? The ball’s in your court, Inter.

As an Inter fan, that made me laugh as much as it made me weirdly proud. Almost as if Inter are remembering that their history as a club allows them to aim absolutely high (although at present, a delusional basket is what it is)
