Liverpool have apparently made a bid for Dutch U-21 star Ryan Babel. The Ajax forward is rated as the brightest young prospect in Dutch football by none other than Marco van Basten and has already been linked to Arsenal and Newcastle – whadyareckon?

Holland have better young players than Babel, it just goes to show how ridiculously out of depth Van Basten is. Babel is possibly the worst finisher of all the attacking players over here in Amsterdam, and not half the player Huntelaar is. Of course, he can develop, but considering Rafa’s record on buying foreign donkeys (Kromkamp, Morientes, Paletta, Josemi) this seems risky .

I have to disagree with Joe here, as I’ve watched Babel quite a bit and think he’s the brightest prospect outside of Drenthe and Emanuelson the Dutch have. With due respect to Huntelaar, Babel is quicker, a better dribbler, and passer. Hunterlaar is a top-class finisher, no doubt, but he’s a poacher and that’s not what Rafa needs. He needs an attacking player who can play on the wing, which is exactly what Babel can do now. Btw, Van Basten can’t coach for his life.

It’s true that he’s the best young Dutch player to suit Liverpool’s needs at the moment (though Feyenoord’s Castelen isn’t half bad either), but I just think there are better wingers around. Why not a swoop for Aaron Lennon? Why not rescue SWP from his blue Purgatory? Maybe even an audacious bid for Arjen Robben, as we seemed to have missed out on Malouda. If we are to be a Big Time Charlie, we should start buying like one beyond a(nother) token Spanish superstar striker.
