Should Rashford Leave Manchester United?

Out in the wider world, Marcus Rashford is a working-class darling at the moment. You might know him for his work in food stamps or politely telling the Prime Minister where he can go, or you might know him for the reason his impact is so great in the first place: his talent on the football field in one of England’s biggest teams.

But the closure of that contract is on the horizon, and Rashford, like a lot of other players, has to reassess his situation. Will he stay with Man Utd, the team he made a name for himself, but has disappointed in the past Premier League season, or move on to greener pastures? We’re breaking down Rashford’s options, including the option of staying put.

What are his options?

Rashford’s public persona might overshadow his talent. The fact that he has been recovering from an injury since October just adds insult to …well, injury, as well. But if you were one to buy Man Utd tickets before October 2021, you’ll see a skilled player that didn’t just have children’s minds captured but also football fans.

And so, if it wasn’t for this injury, we’d be saying Rashford has his pick of the litter. However, his injury might make some pause for thought, and his history in transfers even more so. He has been getting a lot of abuse from “fans” on the field for a less than stellar performance, which teams might pay attention to.

However, it’s no small thing that there are whispers of Paris Saint-Germain following Rashford’s performance closely. For all this talk of his lessened form, Rashford has embarrassed Les Parisians in the Champions League with a game-winning penalty and a few other moments of trouncing the French team. Rashford himself might have expressed a desire to head to Spain with Barcelona or Real Madrid, but perhaps he could slot himself nicely into the Kylian Mbappe-shaped hole in the French team instead.

Meanwhile, closer to home, Newcastle have been declared technically the richest club on the planet – and the dismally 14th place club in the Premier League. Man Utd haven’t done as well as they hoped for with a shiny new manager, but their 6th place makes Newcastle cringe. And Rashford will undoubtedly be a part of that. A small part, due to his frustrating lack of time on the field, but a part nonetheless. Rashford would be a good pick if Newcastle are looking for fresh meat to spur on a better 2022/23 season.

Staying at Man Utd

All this comes down to whether Rashford wants to leave Man Utd. He is a born and bred Red, having graduated from the academy into the Number 10 shirt. And no doubt he’ll have some form of loyalty to the club.

But between the shoulder injury, the change in coaches and coaching style, the abuse on the field, the lack of time on the field, and the general criticism, you can imagine the exit gates of Old Trafford look appealing right now.

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick publicly told Rashford that he is “welcome to leave” during the summer window. You could take that as Rangnick looking out for a player who has felt marginalized in his team or a petty dig.
