David Beckham gets an England recall – but will he be denied 100 caps?

76235171.jpgSo Steve McClaren’s little jaunt to La-La land wasn’t just a short holiday on the FA’s expense account as the England manager has named David Beckham in what could be his final squad for our last Euro 2008 qualifying game against Croatia.
Becks has made a comeback of Hollywood proportions to make it back into McClaren’s thoughts as he desperately tries to fulfill his dream of making it to a 100 England caps. But the irony is that he could come up one short.
Beckham is currently on 97 caps with two games to play, including a friendly against Austria, taking him to 99 before England’s fate is decided. If we don’t qualify it’s unlikely the new regime will look at an ageing, injury prone player seeing his career out in the US.
It seems a bit unfair – would anyone deny the prodigal son the chance to go a ton up, even if it’s only a cameo appearance in a future friendly?

John Terry is definitely out with an injury that even he can’t comeback from in time and with Rio Ferdinand suspended for the Croatia game, England could face a defensive crisis.
There’s better news on the defensive flanks with both Micah Richards and Ashley Cole being declared fit after respective knee and ankle injuries. Otherwise, the squad is:
Goalkeepers: Robinson (Tottenham), James (Portsmouth), Carson (Liverpool, on loan at Aston Villa)
Defenders: Richards (Man City), P Neville (Everton), Brown (Man Utd), Campbell (Portsmouth), Lescott (Everton), A Cole (Chelsea), Bridge (Chelsea), Shorey (Reading)
Midfielders: Beckham (LA Galaxy), Wright-Phillips (Chelsea), Bentley (Blackburn), Lampard (Chelsea), Gerrard (Liverpool), Barry (Aston Villa), J Cole (Chelsea), Downing (Middlesbrough), Hargreaves (Man Utd), Young (Aston Villa)
Forwards: Owen (Newcastle), Rooney (Man Utd), Crouch (Liverpool), Smith (Newcastle), Defoe (Tottenham)

Even if it means that we have to arrange a friendly especially for Becks to get his 100th cap (Possibly Eng Vs USA would do the trick) then i think it should happen. He’s done so much for this team, yeah he’s had his ups and downs but can anyone really think he should be done th injustice of being the almost man on 99 caps?

Becks deserves the 100 caps. The first thing the new manager does (and I hope there will be a new manager) should be to make sure he reaches his goal (as captain as well). The man’s a legend and is one of the few players in the current squad to know what wearing the three lions really means.

I agree with both above commments. Beckham may not be the best player anymore, but he was a class act in his day and still has something to give, even if it is only a 100% commitment to the cause. His throwing up on the sidelines during the world cup, while obviously effected by a lack of fitness, showed the level of dedication to his country the man has.

What Rubbish!! The first thing the new manager should do is make a plan for us to win stuff.
And furthermore Bolton and Everton get a couple of blinding results in Germany last night and all you’ve got on here is the Becks and Crouch show. What is this “Hello”? Get to work!!

If that’s all Beckham wants out of his career and what he’s done for England, then just give it to him. He’s likely to retire from international football if England doesn’t qualify anyways. It should definitely be in a friendly over the summer though. They could do a USA v. England in the US and have a little ceremony and everybody’s happy. Becks gets 100, England gets a little American money. What would it hurt?

The USA/England match would be a massive boost for the Premiership here in the States.
If it can’t be in Saint Louis (for my sake), iIt should be in the Superdome in New Orleans and should be called–
    “The Battle of New Orleans.”
This battle, a defeat of the English by the US, provides the backdrop for one of America’s best-known songs. “They ran so fast the dogs couldn’t catch ’em…”
