Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has told ‘keeper Shay Given he will be allowed to leave the club in January, after losing his ‘No.1’ status to the emergent Joe Hart this season.

Given is yet to feature in any of City’s eight fixtures this season and was linked with several clubs before the transfer window shut at the beginning of the month, although no move materialised.

Speaking after his side’s 2-0 win over Wigan yesterday, Mancini said;

“I told him that he can stay but I respect his decision and if he wants to leave he can. He decided to stay here and until January he must stay here.”

I have a lot of respect for Shay and I told him the situation, I understand his frustration but I need that Shay stays here and puts in 100%.”

As inevitable as his demotion is considering Joe Hart’s sterling form for club and country, it’s sad to see a great goalkeeper going to such an obvious waste. January can’t come around soon enough.

Anyone else foreseeing a return to Newcastle?

    I will be well pleased if he comes back to the toon although i would feel sorry for Harper who is a decent keeper and has been very patient at Newcastle when he probs could have been first choice at many other clubs!!

  2. PhilandoTorres says:

    What was the point in saying he’s not for sale to any rivals a mere month ago? After all, he’s likely to go to one of Citeh’s rivals now. Even most of the mid-table sides have now got quality ‘keepers.

  3. Outside Mid says:

    Do any of Citeh’s rivals play in the Aviva Premiership? If not, The Scarf might let Shay leave to Harlequins to play fly half I guess.

  4. Mbanks says:

    He needs wants 1st team football and at 34 he needs to be getting it really.

    Let him move on but not to anyone who Man City might be fighting for places in the top half of the Premier league (i.e. Arsenal).

    Also if you have some time on your hands and want to play a football game check out Footy! on Facebook. Thank me later :D

    ehh can’t see him going back to newcastle at this level, but if torres and reina actually plan on leaving anfield; that would be a great move for him.

  6. Fellaini's Fro says:

    With harper injured possible for the FA to grant an emergency loan move for given to return to newcastle? But then again i read that on the BBC’s football gossip column :/

    Poor Given. Was the only reason City ended up in the UEFA last season and now he’s ditched like a lame dog. Standard City, I suppose
