Confidence is vital to a striker, it can turn an Andy Carroll into a Robin Van Persie, or a Fernando Torres into a Clint Dempsey. However, too much belief in yourself and you can, very easily, become a bit of a knob (see Nicklas Bendtner).

Bury centre-forward, Giles Coke, gave us all a prime example of over-confidence in action against Yeovil at the weekend, when he refused to hand over the ball to team captain and designted penalty taker, Steven Schumacher (what great names these lads have!).

Coke, on loan from Sheffield Wednesday, won a penalty after being fould in the Glovers’ box. However, so eager to nab a goal for himself was the 25-year-old, he refused to give the ball to Schumacher. A ridiculously embarrassing row followed, with both players getting a booking for their trouble. The captain scored, by the way.

Coke has since apologised, saying:

“When playing my emotions run high, and in my mind following being brought down, all I could think of was getting the ball and making it 3-1.”

“I make no apology for wanting to win, however I am also a professional footballer and fully appreciate the need to respect the captain and manager, even when emotions are running high.”

Still a knob, mind.

I almost forgot about Sodje and his hilarious bandana! Apparently he’s still alive and kicking.

Stevie Schumacher is mates with my cousin. Very good player, should be playing at a higher level!

Alan, Chris et al – Pies has been the only outlet giving Dempsey his due, so the above Torres comparison comes as a bit of a surprise. Dempsey is in fine form and scoring at a high rate, while Torres isn’t scoring at all. Not a fair comparison to Dempsey.

And to be fair, Torres really hasn’t looked bad in recent games (aside from not being able to hit the net).

  4. Alan Duffy says:

@SpursUSA – the point I’m making is that Torres has no confidence and is poor right now, but if he had confidence he would be as good Clint Dempsey is right now. And Dempsey is superb, and highly under-rated.

@Alan – Got it! Thanks for clarifying.

    @SpursUSA My pleasure!

    You’re no Di Canio

@Alan I think you may need to dumb down your caustic wit so that you don’t offend our US cousins

  9. Gary Megson says:

    Coke isn’t a striker, he’s a central midfielder/winger.

  10. Tom Jones says:

Dempsey underrated???? LOL He is overrated.

@Alan and @Al…..Please don’t dumb down the humour and sharp wit…..It’s one of the main reasons I visit Pies (No sarcyness intended)

Something similar happened last week in the Portuguese League Cup. Matias Fernandez was supposed to take the kick but Bojinov took the ball away from him. The difference is… he missed.

  13. SpursUSA says:

@Alan @Al @Jay @Pies – Don’t change anything. I simply read it wrong. Interesting though that I (must have) assumed which side(s) of the analogy Torres and Dempsey were on. As a US fan I guess I’m predisposed.

    Keep up the good work.

    Oh, and @Al – Cheers.

What a fucken idiot. Thank goodness Shumacher put it away (under extra pressure). I can only imagine what that scumbag would’ve said had the captain missed.
