It all got a little tense at the end, but Mamelodi Sundowns tussled their way to a nervy 24 (24!)-0 victory over Powerlines in the last 32 of the South African Nedbank Cup, setting a national record in the process.

10-0 up at half-time, by the final whistle Sundowns’ Hlompho Kekana had notched seven, Nyasha Mushekwi six and Richard Henyekane had bagged himself five goals as Mamelodi ran roughshod over their opponents, comfortably eclipsing the previous record win in South Africa – AmaZulu’s 16-0 Mainstay Cup trouncing of Ford Pirates in 1986.

Highlights (there’s an awful lot of goals)…

Thanks to Pies’ chief South African contact Lady B for the tip-off.

    I smell match fixing

  2. Les says:

Looks more likely that it is equivalent to Man Utd v the sunday pub team from down my road

  3. Lady B says:

Les, you’re right, Powerlines are from SA’s 3rd division I think. But look at the national team, they’re rather a joke. SA soccer really is that shit

  4. Gav says:

Moyes would have sat back on a 1-0. Attacking at 14-0 just leaves you open at the back

  5. Alex says:

Roberto Martinez would’ve found some positives to take from the game if he were in charge of Powerlines.

  6. Danny says:

That music gets a little annoying after the 16th or 17th goal, definitely by the 19th

  7. Lunga says:

Actually, they’re in the SAB Regional League, which is 2 divisions lower than the First Division. An amateur team with half the players unemployed and without an income. Sundowns is owned by Patrice Motsepe, the guy that tried to buy Newcastle a few years back. So, it was a gross mismatch. Powerlines are a Sunday League Pub team… Or just about. Should serve as a wake up call to the authorities.

  8. Dale says:

It gets lost in with all the others, but how about the finish for goal #21? BANG. Back post.

  9. Titus says:

How great would it be if Ray Hudson was the commentator for this match???

  10. Chris Paton says:

0-24,Powerlines FC do not know how to play soccer, the Defenders did not do any work and as for the team they did not care one since bite on winning.

  11. KingB3113 says:

Fernando Torres wouldn’t have scored against Powerlines FC

  12. WildScotsman6 says:

Saw a few offsides I think… game may have taken a dramatic turn if those goals were ruled offside… lol

  13. Anonymous says:

How the hell was this team matched to Sundowns? This game shouldn’t have happenned in the first place. They are from the lowest division for crying our loud…nxxxxxx

  14. perastikos says:

Terry Wogan commenting on this would be a delight.

  15. Orochimaru says:

Lol @ KingB3113 – Funny thing is when Sundowns play there next game they’ll probably fail to score, local league here is shit and most of the moyatti’s can’t finish (At least when it matters most)

  16. kamz says:

They amateur players in a league 3 tiers below the Sundowns. What did anyone expect?
