In which Andrey Arshavin, shortly after providing the assist for Vladimir Bystrov to open the scoring for Zenit against CSKA Moscow with a back post header (and pulling his stomach muscle in the process), helps his teammate ‘celebrate’ by standing on Bystrov as he lay on the turf waiting for the physio…

Bystrov was then immediately subbed off.

Anyone have the foggiest? No? Me neither.

Ever the enigma, Arshavin then went on to score the second goal in Zenit’s 2-0 win, taking them to within spitting distance of claiming the Russian Premier League title…

    I wish I knew!
This is one of the stranger things I have seen…

  3. anonymoose says:

Arshavin and Bystrov are really close friends. Bystrov is one of Arshavin’s few supporters in the Zenit dressing room; Malafeev, Anyukov and Shirokov hold a lot of hatred for Andrey.

  4. TheBelgianBrady says:

anonymoose: Isn’t Bystrov hated too by supporters because of his Spartak past? Is he hated in the dressing room as well? And if he’s such close friends with Arshavin, is this some kind of weird Russian friendship ritual or what?

  5. Dan says:

want to shed a bit more light on that, anonymoose?

  6. Mr. Sparkle says:

It’s called the Stomach stomp. Russians do it as a great sign of friendship and love.

    I’m just shitting you all. I haven’t the foggiest…

  7. Khairo says:

He stepped on it to “tighten” the muscle a bit, no? Just like when you have a leg cramp and you ask your friend to tighten it up by pulling (pushing?) it?

  8. Patrick says:

well, Arshavin weighs about 30 lbs soaking wet, right, so it couldn’t have been that bad.

And here we all thought he was weird when he played in England.

    Who knew?!!

Its a russian thing, to show someone is ‘hard’ or ‘tough’
