The treatment of officials is very much at the forefront in Dutch football at the moment as the country continues to mourn and lament the tragically senseless death of amateur linesman Richard Nieuwenhuizen and, with that firmly in mind, referee Serdar Gozubuyuk made a pronounced point of standing up for himself on Saturday evening.

Fed up of the remorseless haranguing he was receiving from Groningen coach Robert Maaskant on the touchline, referee Gozubuyuk halted play during their Eredivisie game against VVV Venlo and used his ‘Respect’ armband to shame the manager into shutting up…

One more word and it’s the naughty step for you.

All Maaskant said was ‘100 percent foul’. What happened with Nieuwenhuizen is terrible but some people are overreacting now on normal ‘heat of the game’ emotions.

Good on the ref. About time refs stood up for themselves for something as paramount as respect. We need to follow the Rugby form of Respect to a ref.

Obviously respect towards officials is important, and out of context this looks like a great showing. However, Robert Maaskant didn’t say anything inflammatory or even criticised the referee all that much. Gözübüyük decided to do this in advance, with his respect armband in his pocket. That sorta makes it a bit icky to me, scoring over the death of an innocent father.
