Hard-rocking German hairball Torsten Frings announced his retirement from the game at the age of the 36 yesterday, so to mark his passage into the footballing hereafter we thought we’d revisit his definitive career highlight: his 30-yard super blooter against Costa Rica for Germany in the opening match of the 2006 World Cup…

Shaboom and, indeed, kaboom!

Frings had been playing in the MLS with Toronto FC for the past couple of years, but called time on his impressive career yesterday, ending his 18-season professional career due to problems in his recovery from the surgery he underwent on his hip at the tail end of last season.

Frings decided that, rather than continue collecting wages while he was unable to contribute, he’d rather retire and help the club by freeing up a designated player spot on the Toronto roster and making a bit of room under the MLS salary cap.

He also told reporters that he’s now intent on obtaining his coaching license.

Best of luck with that Chuck!
