Things are rather quiet at the moment in the footballing ether but here’s is a morsel of Teutonic silliness from Hamburg’s amateur  Oberliga division during a game between Altona 93 and Vier-und Marschlande.

Playing the game on an American football pitch may be a good dual use of the local facilities, but when a shot from one of the Vier-und Marschlande players went out of play only to rebound off the American football goal-frame and back into play, things got a tad confused. Well, at least for the hapless ref, who waved play on, allowing striker Beytullah Atug to fire home, much to the dismay of the Altona 93 boys.

An officiating cock-up even Graham ‘three yellows’ Poll would be embarrassed by. Oh, and the game ended 3-1 to Altona 93, as I’m sure you were desperate to know.

    Nice jersey Vier-und!

  2. Eckpfosten says:

The phantomgoal was shot by a SC Vier- und Marschlande-Player. The Altona-Players wear those three-colored shirts. To add some german fanculture-Knowledge: Altona 93 is the “new” FC St. Pauli. Many old St. Pauli-Fans who are unhappy with the commerce at Millerntor (St. Pauli Stadium) support the small 5th tier club in their Hometown.

Nicely spotted, but sorry to correct you: the awkward decision went in Vier- und Marschlande’s favour (and Altona 93 is in fact the team sporting those glorious white, red and black hoops).

If i remember correctly from being a youth referee in america, (american) football goalposts, trees, and anything overhanging the field counts ‘as the field’. so as long as the ball doesn’t fully cross the line its all good.

  5. Adam says:

    No, they don’t.

  6. Guy says:

Judging by the bounce of the ball off the crossbar the yank football posts look a couple of yards back, so the issue of “overhang” is moot.
