What with them trailing 1-0 from the first leg and then going both a man and a further goal down inside 20 minutes of the second leg, it looked like Club America were down and out in their Mexican league final bout against Cruz Azul on Sunday evening.

As time wicked away it began looking increasingly unlikely that Club America were going to pull anything out of their arses until Aquivaldo Mosquera mustered a consolation goal in the 89th minute to make the aggregate score 2-1 and give his side a flicker of hope.

What Club America needed was a hero, and that’s precisely what they got when their goalkeeper Moises Muñoz ventured forth for a 93rd-minute corner, connecting with a diving header and steering the ball (via a fairly hefty deflection) into the Cruz Azul goal to level the tie at the death…

A goal-less half-an-hour of extra time ensued before the game went to penalties, with Club America winning the shootout 4-2 and thus securing their 11th Mexican league title in the process!

What a hero…

  2. Mexico says:

This ties Club America with their bitter rivals Club Deportivo Guadalajara(Chivas) for most Mexican League titles. Don’t know how I feel about this. Club America has been known to buy the best players in the league and rely heavily on foreign talent, while Chivas has only ever used Mexican players, well except for recently as some of their squad members are American born yet both their parents are Mexican-born.

  3. Juan says:

Gotta say though, América actually used a lot of youth during this tournament (2 youth players in the final’s starting line-up, Diego Reyes included who is now leaving for Porto). Cruz Azúl are the Mexican Spurs.

Also, this keeper was in a car crash a year ago. Remarkable.
