With the Socceroos moving to within three points of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup with a 4-0 win over Jordan on Tuesday evening, coach Holger Osieck (who was Franz Beckenbauer’s No.2 at Italia ’90) rode in on a wave of high spirits and treated the assembled media at his post-match press conference to a fabulous burst of sexist latin.

Upon entering the room and being instructed where to sit, Osieck told one of the PR bods, “You push me around like my wife,” adding “There is a saying…’Mulieres taceres in ecclesia,‘” which translates – unfortunately for old Holger, as “women should be silent in public.”

The phrase apparently originates from the bible, specifically 1 Corinthians 14:34 and literally translates as “women should remain silent in the churches,” which is hardly any better.

After muttering the line, 64-year-old Osieck told the reporters that “I say it to my wife at home, it is a private one, OK?”, asked if the quip was off the record and remarked that if it got out he would be “the darling of all Australian wives.”

Osieck has since issued a sort-of apology:

‘To everyone who may feel offended by that, I offer a sincere apology. It was off the record, it was more a funny remark. It was nothing against any women or whatever. Definitely just a complete misunderstanding.

“I have a lot of respect for women and have been married for a number of years and I’m still pretty happy with my wife so everything is fine.”

“Pretty happy”?! Someone’s definitely getting neutered when he gets home.
