Given the history between the two nations, Serbia vs Croatia was never going to be a pretty spectacle and sho ’nuff, grizzled centre-back Josip Simunic (he of “three yellow cards” fame) provided a moment of sheer ugly brutality ten minutes from time when he rearranged Miralem Sulejmani’s internal organs with a full-tilt cynical trip to halt a Serbian counter-attack ten minutes from time with the score locked a 1-1.

As the ball broke from the area following a Croatian corner, Sulejmani collected it and began galloping up the pitch. Simunic, realising he was the last man, took the only course of action available to him and completely wiped out the Benfica forward with a spectacular body smash so powerful it sent both players helicoptering off into the air…

Ooof. Bloody hell, that winded us just watching it!

Unsurprisingly, Simunic was shown a straight red card for his troubles as the match ended 1-1 with both sides ending the night with ten men as Serbia had already had Nemanja Matic sent off by this point!
