According to Eurosport, Benfica coach Jorge Jesus (the Sandi Toksvig of the managerial world) may be staring down the barrel of a three-year – YEAR! – ban for forcibly fending off security guards and police who were trying to pin down a pitch-invading fan at the end of Benfica’s 1-0 win at Vitoria Guimaeres on Sunday.

Several excitable fans burst onto the pitch after the final whistle, with stadium security quickly on the scene to subdue them, though Jesus was upset at the rough treatment one supporter in particular was receiving and angrily attempted to intervene.

“The fans came on the pitch and security tried to block one of them and I wanted them to leave him alone as he only wanted to look for a (player’s) shirt,” Jesus said after the hubbub had died down.

Portuguese paper A Bola claim that no officials charges have been brought against Jesus yet, but Eurosport have confirmed that he was arrested and questioned after the game for “interfering with police work” and that, in addition to any criminal charges, Jesus could face a touchline ban of up to three years.

Now, of course, that’s the worst case scenario (from Jesus’ perspective) but it certainly seems as though some fairly heavy punishments are in the pipeline.

Jesus is being persecuted again. Someone call Mel Gibson.
