Fernando Torres marked his first appearance for Spain in over 11 months with a goal against Bolivia last night, opening the scoring in the 51st minute with sort of Panenka-ish penalty.

However, Torres – as has become custom – didn’t fare quite as well out in open play just a minute or so later, with the hapless Chelsea striker royally lousing up a chance by spooning an attempted “deft lob” several kilometres over the Bolivian crossbar…

Oh dear.

For the record, Andres Iniesta then added a second for Spain with five minutes remaining to seal a fairly routine 2-0 victory…

The Spain striker storyline could well be the key to this World Cup. I’m not expecting Costa to be fully fit unless they save him until the third group game or so. Hammys just don’t heal this quickly, horse placenta or not. Plus he’s had zero integration with the Spain midfield that seems to almost operate on memory. Torres is way past it, Villa may be useful as a late sub, and Negredo has lost confidence. I don’t understand Del Bosque’s issues with Llorente. For me, he offers more than any other striker available to Spain, and can add a totally different dimension to the way they play. I expect lots of “false nine” and 1-0 snoozers from Spain again.

What on earth is the Bolivian goalie doing on Iniesta’s goal? Torres missing the goal by 50 meters is hardly news, but this goalie must be drinking a mojito in his mind. He just watches a shot, from outside of the box with below average power, and sort of walks towards the direction it is going as it passes him. Huh?
