Chile secured a precious opening game win on Friday night courtesy of a hard-fought 3-1 win against Australia. Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez was the star of the show for the South Americans. scoring the opener on 12 minutes before setting up Jorge Valdivia to make it 2-0 just two minutes later.

However, Chile looked vulnerable at the back and eventually the Socceroos got a goal back, courtesy of veteran midfielder Tim Cahill. The Australians then pushed for an equaliser but it was Chile who would net the final goal of the game, with another ex-Premier League player, Jean Beausejour, scoring from long-range at the death.

With Spain losing to the Netherlands, Group B is wide open. However, if Chile are to progress to the knockout stages, they’ll have to improve ahead of their next two games.
