Hungary 1-2 Northern Ireland – Euro 2016 Qualifying – 7th September 2014

While Martin O’Neill’s Republic of Ireland were securing a 2-1 win away in Georgia, Michael O’Neill’s Northern Irish side were themselves battling their way to a precious 2-1 victory in Hungary.

All the goals in this game came late on after the visitors had had the better of things for long periods of the game. However, it was Hungary who eventually opened the scoring courtesy of Tamas Priskin’s header on 75 minutes. But the Irish stayed focused and goals from sub Niall McGinn and Kyle Lafferty ultimately secured the Northern Irish their first away win in four years.

What a great result for the Irish. However, what has happened to Hungarian football?!

    Irish means Republic of Ireland.

We are Northern Irish. How people cannot grasp this is beyond me.

Try walking into any bar in Belfast and describing the locals as “Irish” and see what happens.

It’s the equivalent of calling Scottish people “English”.

  2. Alan Duffy says:

I’m a Dubliner myself, James, so am well aware of the political situation on the island.

However, sometimes keeping a headline sharp and as short as possible outweighs any petty chip-on-your-shoulder politics. Sorry about that.

  3. james says:

So describing the team in such a way as to offend a significant portion (if not a majority) of the population is OK as long as it cuts down on words?

You acknowledge that it offends people but don’t care. It also confuses people as the Irish team is that of the Republic. If you asked 100 football fans how the “Irish” did tonight they’d all tell you they beat Georgia 2-1.

For both of the above reasons you will never see the Northern Irish team described as “Irish” on BBC Sport nor any Northern Irish television broadcast. It’s either “Northern Irish”, “NI” or “Green and White Army” every single time.

You could have written “nets NI rare away win”, which is shorter, won’t offend anyone and more obvious as to whom your referring to.

  4. Jarren says:

I’m a proud Norn Iron guy, and I support our team.

    I now live in Canada.

I have come to realise that outside of our wee piece of land, people call us Irish.

    Get used to it.

I find no offence at being called Irish. And yes, I am a Protestant.

I embrace a win by the Republic (almost) as much as a win by us up in the North.

They’re the Free State. They’re the Republic.

They’re Irish. And so are we.

  5. James says:

As a last word on the topic I’ll note that if you look for any other news report on the match from any national paper you won’t find our team being described as Irish even once. I checked the first two pages on google re same to prove my point.

It’s a contentious issue and I will correct anyone who describes me as Irish- I’m either British or Northern Irish. It doesn’t anger me but it’s important that people know. Most of the people I know are the same way inclined.

I’m indifferent to the Republic’s results but the general feeling up North is that they want to see them fail, hence the delight when the Henry handball incident happened.

I’m not so blind as to think that a lot of NI people consider themselves Irish, but the majority will look at that headline and think “We aren’t Irish.”

  6. Jarren says:

Ok James, so we should retitle the post “Late Late Show Nets Northern Irish Rare Away Win”?

    It still implies we’re Irish.

  7. Jarren says:

Anyway, sidetracking aside, what a win by the lads!

A brilliant result, and one of the toughest away fixtures out of the way with all 3 points!

Finland & Greece will be tough away from home as well, but if we can show the same amount of resilience as well as attacking flair throughout the following matches we will have a great chance at qualification.

The biggest games we face are against the Faroe Islands.

We MUST beat them handsomely both at home and away. Goal difference could be crucial come the end of qualification.

We CANNOT fail against them, as we have against similar “minnows” in previous years.

  8. james says:

The name of the country is Northern Ireland and as such the people are Northern Irish. That doesn’t imply that they’re Irish as Irish means Republic of Ireland or I suppose the island as a whole when regarding the likes of rugby. Some people from NI consider themselves Irish and some consider themselves British so Northern Irish is a compromise.

Would you describe Montenegrans as Serbs or Ukranians as Russians?

Controversy aside it’s confusing to describe two separate teams as “Irish”, especially when they’ve both won away games 2-1 at the exact same time.

There’s another example of it in the article. Just substitute Irish for “NI” “Northern Irish” or “Green and White Army” like every other credible football website does and there’s no problem.

Doesn’t the crest on your national side’s shirt say “irish football association”. Confusing indeed
