In the tunnel before last night’s Coppa Italia tie against Fiorentina, this young Roma mascot felt the full force of a Francesco Totti handshake – almost wetting himself in total discombobulation at what had just happened!

Bang! You’ve been Totti’ed.

love how he notices the camera afterwards and tries to pull himself together!

When Roma came to the states in 2012 I felt the same way, walking 20 feet behind him in the middle of Boston and it looked like the clouds parted and God himself was telling me: “Yeah, that’s him.”
let me tell you first hand his reaction is the same on a 16 year old as it is on a 9 year old.

When I lived in Florence I used to loiter outside the Excelsior Hotel on Saturday nights before Fiorentina home games because it’s where visiting teams would stay. After stumbling into Francesco Toldo one night it became a sort of tradition.

In 2005 on the eve of Fiorentina-Milan I was hanging around the lobby while the rossoneri players were eating in a large dining room. Suddenly a lift opened and out strolled Paolo Maldini, looking every bit the “capitano” in his Milan blazer. I don’t remember walking over to him but suddenly I was a foot away. I extended a hand, thanking him for everything. We made eye contact, he shook my hand and thanked me back. According to his profile we are the same height but he seemed to tower over me, though maybe that was because by this point my legs had turned to spaghetti. He even signed the 8″ x 5″ I’d brought with me just in case.

Incredibly the evening was further improved upon when Rui Costa exited the bar with old pal Gabriel Batistuta in tow. They both shook hands with me, Batigol even saluting me with a cheery “Ciao!” as if we already knew each other, which in a spiritual sense of course, we did.

On Milan’s next visit to Florence I found an exceedingly bored looking Filippo Inzaghi sitting in an armchair alongside Christian Brocchi. Seeing as he clearly had nothing to do for the next fifteen hours I asked for a photo. SuperPippo was more than happy to oblige, although shortly after posing for our impromptu selfie I received a tap on the shoulder from hotel management (which consisted of man younger than myself with a silly haircut).

“How did you get in here?” he asked.

It seemed pretty obvious to me. “The door.”

“Look, don’t talk to the footballers,” he ordered.

I looked to my new pal Pippo who clearly didn’t want to get involved. Brocchi hadn’t looked up from his phone the whole time. So I walked out and have never been back.
