Taking archetypal South American crowd disturbance to new levels, rolling clouds of tear gas caused the recent Copa Libertadores tie between Uruguay’s Nacional and Chilean side Palestino to be temporarily halted despite the stadium being completely empty.

Alvaro Recoba was not amused…

The reason for the tear gas being released has yet to be confirmed – though, at least according to local news sources, it’s thought that the canister went off accidentally while the security staff were conducting a drill in the corner of the stadium.

Once the CS fog cleared, three-time champions Nacional found themselves missing out on making the Copa Libertadores group stage for the first time in 19 years despite beating Palestino (who are minnows in comparison) 2-1 on the night.

Recoba and co. lost 0-1 in the first leg last week and therefore crashed out on away goals.
