Super Benno, leading by example
Grays Athletic manager Mark Bentley put in a heroic cameo shift for his side on Wednesday evening, providing the inspiration for an unlikely come-from-behind victory against Ryan Premier League rivals Hampton & Richmond Borough.
With his side trailing 2-1 as the second half wore on, Bentley emerged from the bench and subbed himself on – duly heading home an equaliser for Grays having been on the pitch for just a few minutes.
However, not content with merely doing the business at the sharp end, Bentley then stepped up to the plate when his goalkeeper was sent off in the 81st minute – replacing Connor Gough betwixt the sticks for the last ten minutes.
Bentley’s first order of business was facing the resulting penalty, which he managed to keep out with an ungainly though undoubtedly effective save to keep the score at 2-2…
What’s more, with time wicking away Grays forward Joao Carlos went and scored a dramatic last-gasp winner to nick a 3-2 victory with the last meaningful kick of the game.
