Flamengo just about triumphed over old foes Vasco de Gama in the Campeonato Carioca on Sunday evening, winning 2-1 despite the rain-shrouded tie descending into a bit of a damp farce by the end of the night.

Firstly came the comical debacle that preceded the opening goal, with a water-logged penalty area providing the assist for Flamengo striker Alecsandro…

Alecsandro then went on to score his second goal of the game from the penalty spot and duly celebrated with an impromptu Gene Kelly number…

The game then ended in utter chaos, as the referee administered a quadruple sending-off in the 85th minute which saw Flamengo’s Paulinho and Anderson Pico as well as Vasco pair Bernardo and Pablo Guinazu all (quite rightly) receive their marching orders at the same time for their respective roles in a petty on-pitch squabble…

Brazilian football, eh? It’s never boring.
