There was confused looks all around before yesterday’s friendly between El Salvador and Argentina in Washington DC when the good folks at the FedEx Field accidentally played the wrong anthem just as the Salvadorian players clenched their fists over their hearts.

After it gradually dawned on the team that they were saluting the wrong song, nobody (including a large proportion of the 58,000+ crowd) quite knew what to do with themselves…

For those unaware, the El Salvador anthem is a completely different tune.

In fact, it’s a straight rip-off of the William Tell Overture (aka, the horse racing music)…

Catchy little number, ain’t it?

  1. Jeremia says:

Americans sure are good at offending other countries, top class work indeed. As expected from a country whose president chews gum in public.

  2. Hootie says:

@Jeremia It was Obama himself that played the wrong anthem.

  3. James Campbell Taylor says:

The same thing happened to France at last year’s World Cup.

  4. James Campbell Taylor says:

The French national team was involved in an identical situation at last year’s World Cup. Pretty embarrassing. Another reason why they should bring back live brass bands!

It doesn’t really surprise me that so many citizens of the U.S are so swollen-headed and ignorant as the bloke who wrote this poxy article. What rip-off are you talking about? you have not listened to the complete salvadoran anthem in order to talk such nonsense. You call your country “America” and America is the name of the whole continent. Read about the world and then write.
