Yay! It’s always nice to win a throw-in

Auxerre beat holders Guingamp 1-0 to reach the final of the Coupe de France on Tuesday evening, with their giddy fans getting just a little carried away by the end of the night.

With 10-man Auxerre desperately defending their slim lead with half a minute of stoppage time still to play, referee Stephan Luzi blew his whistle to indicate an infringement on the edge of their box.

Large swathes of Auxerre fans mistook Luzi’s peep for the final whistle and, with the tension prematurely lifted, proceeded to come yomping jubilantly onto the pitch only to realise there were 30 seconds left on the clock…

What’s French for “oopsy daisy”?

Despite the amusing delay, Auxerre held on to book themselves safe passage through the final where they’ll meet either PSG or Saint Etienne depending on the result of tonight’s other semi.
