Sunday evening saw New York Red Bulls beat New York City FC in what we’d class as a right old ding-dong of a derby.

It all began before kick-off when rival fans were involved in a punch-up outside a pub near the stadium in Newark, New Jersey, showing that our American brethren are just as au fait with hooligan decorum as their European counterparts…

The needle continued inside the arena, though it was much more good-natured and above board – with the Red Bulls fans kicking things off with a chucklesome jab at NYCFC’s ageing midfield axis in the form of a huge “City Retirement Home” banner…

Things escalated from there, with David Villa even tearing Felipe Martins’ shorts right in half at one point to expose his slightly confusing underwear arrangement…

As for the actual football match, Red Bulls ended the evening with the spoils as goals from Bradley Wright-Phillips and Martins (with a fresh pair of shorts) securing the 2-0 victory.

Is it just me or do the thugs have a distinctly ‘English hooligan’ sound to their chanting? “‘oo are ya?!” Genuinely wonder if they are US natives or immigrants.

  2. Straight Dave says:

@mojojojo You can even hear something that sounds a lot like “Wemberleee, wemberleee” at the beginning aswell. I know the Yanks are jealous of our football culture/camaradarie but it doesn’t make sense to directly replicate our chants ffs..

Having attended the reverse fixture I can testify that the overriding sensation of live football in New York is one of people “playing” the role of football fan, which seems to have been taken to new extremes yesterday. This particularly rivalry seems very forced since NYCFC have only existed about twenty minutes. And yes, there are a lot of Brits among them. Maybe they were banned from attending games in Europe…

They’re not English immigrants, they’re faking the accent. Happens alot with American soccer fans

That’s actually amazingly interesting from an anthropological point of view. Forcing a fake rivalry and mimicking the accent and chants of a bunch of twats an ocean away… Football is wonderful (maybe some people are not!).

Not surprising seeing as American footie hooligans/ultras/fans have been informed by such classics as “Green Street Hooligans” and various granulated CCTV youtube videos of Leeds fans throwing plastic chairs at people. I should know, I’m an American football fan.
